Trigger Point Injections Q & A

What are trigger points?

Trigger points are painful knots in your muscles, often started by spasms or inflammation. You might even be able to feel these knots with your fingers, particularly in your upper back or shoulders. While it’s most common to have trigger points in your back and shoulder muscles (rhomboid and trapezius muscles), you can also have them in your lower back or extremities.

Trigger points can be problematic because they sometimes irritate nerves around them, making the pain even worse. When they affect your nerves, you may feel pain in an entirely different part of your body.

How is the trigger point injection (TPI) done?

Trigger point injections are performed by inserting a tiny injection needle directly into the muscle. The injection usually contains a sterile saline solution or a local anesthetic. In some cases, it also contains a corticosteroid.

Trigger point injections make your trigger point inactive, and patients usually notice a considerable decrease in pain right away. Depending on the severity of your trigger point (or trigger points), you may need several injections during your visit.

Why do I have trigger point pain?

Trigger points are usually tied to chronic musculoskeletal disorders. You’re more likely to have issues with trigger points if you have:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Tension headaches
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Temporomandibular joint disease (TMJ)
  • Acute trauma or injury
  • Undiagnosed neck or back pain

You might benefit from trigger point injections if you have any of the above conditions. We can repeat the treatment again if you didn’t get full pain relief from your first session. However, most of the time, trigger pain sufferers feel better after one session.

Are trigger point injections painful?

A little, but you shouldn’t be in excruciating pain. We can use a topical numbing spray or cream to minimize the sting you might feel. If you’re sore afterward, we can apply ice or heat for a few minutes.

Don’t focus too much on getting a shot, or the quick sting or burn you may go through. Instead, just remember how much better you’ll feel afterward, without those painful knots.
